At a SXSW 2024 panel, Peter Deng, OpenAI’s VP of consumer product dodged a question on whether artists whose work was used to train generative AI models should be compensated. While OpenAI lets artists “opt out” of and remove their work from the datasets that the company uses to train its image-generating models, some artists have described the tool as onerous. OpenAI has partnered with another news publisher in Europe, London’s Financial Times, that the company will be paying for content access. “Through the partnership, ChatGPT users will be able to see select attributed summaries, quotes and rich links to FT journalism in response to relevant queries,” the FT wrote in a press release. The company says GPT-4o mini, which is cheaper and faster than OpenAI’s current AI models, outperforms industry leading small AI models on reasoning tasks involving text and vision. GPT-4o mini will replace GPT-3.5 Turbo as the smallest model OpenAI offers.

Llama 3.1 was launched in July and comes with three sizes, 8 billion parameters, 70 billion and the new frontier-grade 405 billion parameter version. This was followed by Llama 3.2 in September in two smaller sizes, and an 11b and 90b version that can analyze images. The voice mode is built on top of OpenAI’s Advanced Voice and unlike the ChatGPT product, Copilot Voice is available for free and I found it more conversational. This is a recent update and brings with it a much larger context window and rapid, higher-quality reasoning. Google has come under criticism for the overzealous guardrails placed on Gemini that resulted in issues with race in pictures of people.

Getting access to GPT-4o in ChatGPT

The company did not set a timeline for when that might actually happen. People were in awe when ChatGPT came out, impressed by its natural language abilities as an AI chatbot originally powered by the GPT-3.5 large language model. But when the highly anticipated GPT-4 large language model came out, it blew the lid off what we thought was possible with AI, with some calling it the early glimpses of AGI (artificial general intelligence). Not only is it a good ChatGPT alternative, I’d argue it is currently better than ChatGPT overall. It will create a full app or write an entire story and is funnier than OpenAI’s flagship product. Claude is the most human chatbot I’ve ever interacted with and with the addition of Claude 3.5 Sonnet and the new Artifacts feature — I use it more than ChatGPT. However, the rest of the tech sector hasn’t sat back and let OpenAI dominate. Some of its competitors equal or exceed the abilities of ChatGPT and others offer features it doesn’t.

OpenAI’s newest AI model can hold a humanlike conversation
